Goethe´s masterpiece and perhaps the greatest work in German literature is sometimes called “drama of the world”, “drama both divine and diabolical”, “theology of the world and of Eros”. It is also a metaphor of the eternal human struggle to uncover the meaning of human existence. Faust was for a long time considered to be a closet drama, meant to be read rather than performed. But the experience of the modern theatre with the simultaneity of dramatic plots and scenes make this work appear more and more contemporary. Searching for a new form of God and Devil, Faust´s immense yearning for knowledge, bringing mankind to the verge of destruction and Mephistopheles´ derisive nihilism, shall accompany our existence until the end of all time. The legendary two volume drama has been translated into Slovak for the first time ever and it has never been staged in
