SNS Drama stages one of the greatest dramatic pieces of all times in a new translation by Milan Richter and in the direction of Martin Čičvák, whose SND productions Mutter Courage, Leonce and Lena and Kaballe und Liebe have received numerous awards. Goethe´s masterpiece and perhaps the greatest work in German literature is a metaphor of the eternal human struggle to uncover the meaning of human existence. Faust was for a long time considered to be a closet drama, meant to be read rather than performed. But the experience of the modern theatre with the simultaneity of dramatic plots and scenes make this work appear more and more contemporary. The eternal conflict between the God and the Devil, between Faust and Mephistopheles, between reason and feeling melts together into the unity of being, of human life and destiny. Faust´s endless strenuousness and Mephistopheles´ derisive nihilism, which negate each other, shall accompany our existence until the end of all time. Goethe´s Faust has from its creation been seen as one of theatre´s greatest challenges. When should we tackle it, if not in SND´s anniversary season?
