An intelligent comedy, in which the cheater may easily become the cheated one.
Studio, the new building of SND, Saturday 18. September 2010 - 19:00
N. V. Gogol (1809 – 1852) is one of the greatest Russian writers whose comedies Government Inspector, Marriage and The Gamblers are among the most frequently staged plays around the world. Mounting Russian classics plays a significant role in the history of SND Drama and in the biography of the director Ľubomír Vajdička as well. SND Drama stages The Gamblers in its anniversary season.
Russia of the 19th century. A group of cardsharps meets one evening to entangle another naïve stranger in its net. The intrigues and cheating and their entire corrupt philosophy epitomize the mentality of Russia of the time. In its construction, the play is wonderfully foreseeable and full of humour. It derides our pragmatic ambitions, our indifference towards any higher aims in a world that oppresses us with its harsh materialism.
Gogol´s metaphor is timeless and the staging of this play is not only an effort to present the “mandatory classics” but to make a statement about our time. Gogol makes us look into a mirror and asks: What are you laughing at, ladies and gentlemen?
