Christopher Hampton: Embers

Embers is the dramatization of significant Hungarian writer Sandor Marai’ s novel. Candles flicker out off the pen of contemporary English dramatist and wreathed with the Oscar festooned, film writer Christopher Hampton.

It was introduced in the world premiere just few months ago with huge success in London. This magical story about meeting of two original old friends literary pulls into the destiny of two old men – self-confident General Henrich, preferring values of old world, and his childhood mate, globetrotter Conrad.

Forty years ago there happened something secret and important, what forced Conrad to leave the residence and society of his best friend and his beautiful and young wife Christine after hunting time. Henrich has waited almost half of century for Conrad arrival, but what’s more, he has dramatically been preparing for every word of their future discussion, because he absolutely wanted to find out the true reason of his friend’s sudden departure.

Now in the isolation of synthetic kept up nobles surrounding, and yet in the middle of far away cataclysm of Second World War Conrad’s visit again revives the passion from the ash. Marai suggestive pictures of vanishing world uncover genius’ talent, who was born in 1900 in Kosice, and that’s why he doubtlessness belongs to our cultural heritage. Director Roman Polak decided to premiere Embers with drawn down curtain, so the audience will unconventionally sit down there as well.



The play premiered in London’s Duke of York’s Theatre on 15 February 2006 in production of E. Abraham and R. Haggiag.
