William Shakespeare: The Taming Of The Shrew

Skrotenie zlej ženy
Our take on the famous comedy is a parody on the saying „if you go to a woman, take a whip!“ And what else, if you lack the common sense?

Taming of the shrew is rightly considered to be the roughest comedy about relationship between man and woman. The main man hero Petruchio’s motto could be: “If you come towards the woman take a whip with you!” Petruchio’s taming wife’s motto could be: “Husband, my lord is always right!” Relation of this pair is such a prototype of man’s violence and woman’s subsidiarity.
But it wouldn’t be Shakespeare’s play if everything was that easy and simple. That slapstick comedy about rough tamer and his tamed victim is not only played in front of the audience , but also it is played “play within a play” by comedians for primitive colter, who is drunk to dumbness, and in that condition he is carried to aristocrat’s castle for fun. There he is washed and dressed up into lord’s clothes. When he comes to himself he is told that as for a lord some comical piece will be played by nomadic actors. And so the actors sing and play the comedy according to his zest: some slapstick comedy, where manners dominate, which impresses the primitive.
Shakespeare’s comedy, with its parody and its “degeneracy”, convicts the one who likes it. But you can enjoy the comedy, because it is certainly not about you.
