An absurd comedy about an old couple who give a strange party for even stranger people – non-existent ones.
The French playwright of Romanian origin Eugéne Ionesco belongs among the greatest figures of art of the second half of the 20th century. Samuel Beckett and he are fathers of absurd drama. The tragic farce “The Chairs” is considered an Ionesco masterpiece, especially for its comical and tragical meaninglessness. The old man and old woman, who prepare a very special party for even more special guests, are one of the most striking metaphors of human destiny. Another great French playwright of the 20th century, Jean Anouilh, wrote: “Ionesco is much better than Strindberg in this play owing to his black humour á la Moliére: it is frightful, cruel, hurtful, but always truthful”.
