Goldoni is ranked among Europe´s greatest authors of comedies, born out of the tradition of commedia dell´arte. The plot of The Fan is constructed upon a very simple principle: a cheap fan changes hands, causing more and more trouble, complications, bouts of jealousy and scores of faux pas as it passes through a succession of individuals. Watching all this gives us a great insight into a very colourful society and even more colourful relationships, such as we intimately know from our own experience. In spite of the fact that the play premiered in Venice in 1756, it still fulfills Goldoni´s ideas who wanted “to impress human souls, to provoke astonishment or laughs”. In the anniversary season, SND hopes to continue our own “local” tradition: The Fan was among the most successful productions of one of our greatest directors - Karol L. Zachar. After its premiere in 1961, The Fan was given 155 runs. The latest production under the direction of Peter Mikulík is a tribute to our “old maestro”.
