Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky respected Pushkin and his literary heritage also in this opera. Although he did not depict great love with romantic sentiment as he did in the opera Eugen Onegin, but he respected Pushkin as a merciless critic of czarism and its social deformations. To have money, property, and so the highest honour in the society as well, this is the temptation Herman, the leading character of the opera cannot resist. First, he believes in cheap instructions how to become rich and later, he is ready to do everything just to get the money, but the price he pays is devastating to all. The question is, are these only apparitions of the past that have still been that suggestive, or does this old story have something to do also with our present?
