Bedřich Smetana once called his opera The Bartered Bride a toy, referring to its light, comedy genre, which he saw as a distraction from his grand and serious dramas. Hand in hand with the poetics of comedy, the idea of national theatre rooted in folk tradition stepped into this work. The history of its creation however tells us that the road to success and the highly accomplished result was not one of intuitive playfulness and national enthusiasm. Smetana needed four versions before he could shape a mature operatic comedy out of what once was a piece of lowbrow entertainment, so that not folklore puppets, but lively and emotionally ripe characters appear on stage.
Comedy and lyric depth, tradition, folklore and an exceptional story are the coordinates on which every stage director needs to base his or her own approach to Smetana´s masterpiece. In our new staging, the international production team is headed by the Czech-born director Peter Mikuláštík. Chief conductor of the SND Opera, Rastislav Štúr conducts. The cast, with several upcoming stars, seems to suggest a stronger generation change.
