Rusalka (1901),composed by Antonín Dvořák to a libretto written by the dramatist Jaroslav Kvapil, is by far not just a Romantic fairy tale. On the contrary, it uncovers a wealth of symbolic and psychological meanings, which are not visible on the first sight. It depicts the fight between sincerity and hypocrisy teamed with betrayal as well as the eternal struggle of Light and Darkness, the dream of eternity and the reality of mortality. The main character is an undine, but her feelings are deeply human – she is filled with love and desire. She is always alone – alone in making decisions and in accepting their tragic consequences. Dvořák´s opera, steeped in beautiful music, is a drama, that appeals to all those, who are looking for answers to the most important questions in life.
