Eugen Suchoň’s operas Svätopluk (1960) and Krútňava (1949) are foundation stones of Slovak operatic oevre. Whereas with Krútňava the author created a work that has justly received the attribute „national opera“, in Svätopluk he delved into the deepest roots of our historical identity, creating a historic fresco of major significance – not only in terms of art, but, in its broader cultural and social sense as well. There is, however, an additional circumstance that makes Suchoň’s oevre outstanding: if the renascence movement reflected itself in the music and drama of the older Slav cultures as early as in the course of 19th century, Slovak national oevre did not emerge until mid-twentieth century: when works of formidable artistic value were created, combining the originality of their creators with inspiration by the national culture and a striking confrontation with modern European music of the 20th century. The leading personality of this creative movement was undoubtedly Eugen Suchoň. Suchoň’s historical drama Svätopluk has a permanent place on the stage of the Slovak National Theatre Opera. The story of three rods, a story of unity and division remains true until today. After the successful production of Krútňava we again invited the celebrated film director Juraj Jakubisko to stage the new production of Svätopluk. Oliver Dohnányi, director of SND Opera takes over the musical direction. Svätopluk’s premiere is another contribution of the SND Opera dedicated to the Eugen Suchoň Year. The production will be staged in the Opera and Ballet Hall (SND New Building).
