On 8 May 2011 a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler´s death was held at the Slovak National Theatre´s Historic Building featuring the leading Austrian mezzosoprano of her generation Elisabeth Kulman and the ensemble Amarcord Wien
Ondrej Šoth, general director of the Slovak National Theatre, praised the re-establishing of cultural ties with the cultural metropolis
“These days we see Mahler especially as a great composer of monumental symphonies. But the link between lieder and symphonies is stronger in Mahler´s work than in any other composer´s: his symphonies grow out of his lieder and his lieder are the most intimate of what Mahler created. It is a pleasure to welcome Elisabeth Kulman – an artist who conveys this intimate character of Mahler´s music in the most superb way. Together with Amarcord Wien they rediscover the authenticity and passion of Mahler´s music,” said Mr. Šoth.
The concert Mahler Lieder at the Slovak National Theatre was presented on the occasion of the European Opera Days. This year's European Opera Days took place on 7 and 8 May and were celebrated in 105 opera companies across 25 countries.
