On 8 May 2011 a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler´s death was held at the Slovak National Theatre´s Historic Building featuring the leading Austrian mezzosoprano of her generation Elisabeth Kulman and the ensemble Amarcord Wien

Ondrej Šoth, general director of the Slovak National Theatre, praised the re-establishing of cultural ties with the cultural metropolis Vienna, with Mahler and with a concert during the European Opera Days.

“These days we see Mahler especially as a great composer of monumental symphonies. But the link between lieder and symphonies is stronger in Mahler´s work than in any other composer´s: his symphonies grow out of his lieder and his lieder are the most intimate of what Mahler created. It is a pleasure to welcome Elisabeth Kulman – an artist who conveys this intimate character of Mahler´s music in the most superb way. Together with Amarcord Wien they rediscover the authenticity and passion of Mahler´s music,”  said Mr. Šoth.

The concert Mahler Lieder at the Slovak National Theatre was presented on the occasion of the European Opera Days. This year's European Opera Days took place on 7 and 8 May and were celebrated in 105 opera companies across 25 countries. The Slovak National Theatre participated for the first time, together with national theatres in Sofia, Dublin or Damascus and opera houses in Brussels, Rotterdam, Lisbon and Moscow.
