In his Macbeth, Verdi created a portrait of an eccentric couple: Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are two poor dehumanised beings. Their relationship oscillates between a caricature of marriage and merciless power struggle. Yet both are also cruel power-hungry conspirators, obsessed with the burning need to somehow fill their human hollowness. The composer was inspired by Shakespeare’s immortal tragedy, whilst he translated the language of the Elizabethan theatre into the one of Romantic operatic drama with all the attributes required by the 19th-century operatic practice. Yet it wouldn’t be Verdi had he not overcome the clichés and had he not completed the narrative and highlighted his own view about Macbeth the ruler, the cruel Lady, the witches, as well as the Birnam Wood that moves once the last drop of patience spills the cup.
