Orsolya Sáfár

Orsolya Sáfár is a contracted soloist of the Hungarian State Operahouse.

Born in Zalaegerszeg, the Hungarian soprano, after winning in 1999 the Ádám Jenő International Song Contest, was admitted in the same year to the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest where she became a professional artist and also obtained a master’s degree of teaching in 2004 as a student of Erika Sziklay. She has been working with her master Bernadett Wiedemann.

Thanks to several Hungarian and international scolarships she had the opportunity to attend master courses of reputed singers and could take part in a number of Hungarian and international singing competitions. For instance, she came in third in the international Joseph Haydn Aria Competition in 2003, was given a special award of the Italian Riccardio Zandonai Singing Contest in 2006 and also was a finalist in the Hilde Zadek International Voice Competition in 2009.

As a graduate she won the scholarship of the Opera Studio of the Hungarian State Opera House where she made her professional stage debut in the role of Oscar (Verdi: Un ballo in maschera - 2005) and Zerlina (Mozart: Don Giovanni – 2006). Her favourite roles performed on stage are Pamina (Mozart: The Magic Flute), Mimì (Puccini: La Bohème), Liù (Puccini: Turandot) and Marguerite (Gounod: Faust). She is also delighted to perform the well known heroines of Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini and Verdi operas, as well as the the female roles of the 20th & 21st century like Lucy (Menotti: The Telephone), Susanna (Hindemith: Sancta Susanna) or Margarita (Gyöngyösi: The Master and Margarita).

Beside acting in Hungarian cities like Miskolc, Győr, Pécs, Szombathely, Orsolya Sáfár went on stage in Vienna (Wienerfestwochen 2011), was a guest star multiple times in Bratislava at the Slovak National Theatre (2018, 2020) and sang at the Victoria Hall of Genf (New Year’s Eve Gala 2018).

During the summer of 2015, she participated in the tour of Japan organized by the Hungarian State Opera House where she played Susanna (Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro). During a tour of V-4 in 2018 (Varsaw, Bratislava, Praha) she played the role of the Maiden (Kodály: Szekler Spinner). She also acted the role of Adina (Donizetti: Don Pasquale) during the Rolling Opera Production across Transylvania.

She was slected as singing partner of world stars Bryn Terfel in 2016 and Vittorio Grigolo in 2019 in their galaconcert in Budapest. Orsolya Sáfár was also privileged to be the lead and also the narrator of the short film shot as a tribute to the 130th anniversary of the Hungarian State Opera House.

Beside opera roles, her repertoire is still being coloured by several songs, song-cycles and oratorios. She is a regular performer at recognized festivals of classical music.

She was granted the Artisjus Award for all her efforts and activity in performing and promoting contemporary Hungarian musical works in 2003. Her talent and professional performance was highly recognized by the Juventus Award in 2013 and the Gusztáv Oláh Memorial Plaque in 2015 – both awarded by her mother theater, the Hungarian State Opera House. She has been ranked Chambersinger of the season 2018/2019 of the Hungarian State Opera House. She earned the Hungarian State’s Silver Cross of Merit in 2015.
