Slavomír Jakubek studied music theory at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Bratislava. In 1984 he joined the department of symphony, chamber and opera music of the Slovak Radio where he specialized in opera. Later he was appointed editor-in-chief in charge of cooperation with EBU in the field of classical music. He authored and edited a number of radio programmes dedicated to opera. As dramaturge he participated on a number of recordings of leading Slovak opera singers, among them Ľubica Rybárska and Miroslav Dvorský. He was in charge of numerous live transmissions from major opera houses around the world broadcast at Radio Devín and co-organized a number of EBU and non-EBU events, among them International Rostrum of Composers in Paris, the international competition Concertino Praga or the New Talent competition hosted by the Bratislava Music Festival and broadcast live to EBU member states.
In March 2005 Slavomír Jakubek joined the Slovak National Theatre Opera as dramatic adviser, in the years 2006 – 2010 he was chief dramatic adviser and deputy of the artistic director. From April 2011 to July 2012 Slavomír Jakubek was editor-in-chief of the music periodical Hudobný život.
