Studied directing at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava.
After graduation he started to work in the State Theatre in Košice (Eastern Slovakia) and since 1984 in the SNU Theatre in Martin (Central Slovakia) . Important is his co-operation with national theatres in Bratislava, Prague and Brno, as well as with Theatre Astorka´90 (in Bratislava) in the period 1980-1990. Later on he became the internal director and artistic director in this theatre. In 2000-2002 he was the artistic direrctor in the State Theatre in Košice. Since 2006 he works in the Slovak National Theatre as the director of the Drama Theatre.
Roma Polák is a director with specific and unreplacable signature, he has created more than 100 productions.
Unforgettable are for example: Rózewicz – The Trap (1986), Kafka – Process (Polák – Porubjak, 1992), Rostand – Cyrano de Bergerac, Shakespeare – Merchant of Venice (1994), Čechov – Uncle Vanja (1995), Ibsen – Peer Gynt (2000), Play Gorkij – Polák´s adaptation of Summerfolk (2004), Stoppard – Arcadia (2004). In 2005 in the Slovak National Theatre he directed Klimáček´s play Hypermarket, in 2006 Hampton´s play (based on Sándor Márai´s novel) Ashes and Passion (Embers).
His productions of de Marivaux´s play Touches and Connections (The Dispute, 1988), Brecht´s Baal (1989) were extremely successful on international festivals throughout Europe. Both productions were presented at theatrical events in Wroclaw and Toruń (Poland), Baal became the important cultural event in Moscow, Touches and Connections were presented at BITEF in Belgrade and both productions enchanted audience and professional critics in Edinburg. The play Touches and Connections was presented in the Guardian Critic´s Choice.
Roman Polák also co-operated with theatres abroad. In Estonian Tallin he directed de Marivaux´s Touches nad Connections (1989), in Chcago Shakespeare´s Macbeth and in Paris in the Theatre Moliére Pushkin´s A Stone Guest Or Don Juan (1999).
For his outstanding artistic productions Roman Polák was awarded several prestigeous awards
